Gymnasion (“naked people place”) at Ai Khanoum, Afghanistan. Alexander the Great founded this city as Alexandria on the Oxus, and it became an important Indo-Greek city. Bactria, the province in which it was located, was originally a satrapy of the Persian Empire, admired for its wealth and beauty.
